HUNTERSVILLE – The Lake Norman Copperheads won the Southern Collegiate Baseball League for the second straight summer by sweeping the Ballantyne Smokies in the best-of-three championship series July 28-29.
Strong pitching was the key for Lake Norman. The Copperheads (25-17) clinched the title with a 3-2 victory in Game 2 in Charlotte on July 29. Starting pitcher Hunter Hamilton limited Ballantyne to one run and six hits in seven innings.
Reliever Kirk Morgan pitched the ninth and picked up the victory when the Copperheads scored the winning run on an error. Shortstop Daniel Stack was 2-for-4 batting, scored two runs and finished the season with a .308 batting average.
Lake Norman won 3-1 in Game 1 at Hopewell High on July 28. Winning pitcher Michael Strem pitched six scoreless innings. The Copperheads’ 10-hit attack was led by Pierce Suttles (three hits). Ryan Brennan (Mooresville High alum) and Ian Edmiston had two hits each.
Joe Bertone, a Hopewell grad who plays at UNC Wilmington, led the Copperheads in home runs (five) and RBIs (16). Edmiston, who played at Mooresville High, had a .309 batting average.
