HUNTERSVILLE – Hundreds of young swimmers competed July 6 at North Meck Swim League’s Championship Meet at Huntersville Family Fitness and Aquatics.
The all-day event included junior athletes ages 4-18 from Denver, Charlotte, Huntersville and Mooresville.
The annual meet celebrates the conclusion of the 10-week summer swim league in each of the respective neighborhoods. Parent and teen volunteers make the event possible.
The North Meck Swim League and the meet create an athletic environment that encourages self-improvement, friendly competition and fun in the summer.
“Summer swim league is more laid back and to me, should be more about having fun, building confidence and stressing sportsmanship,” longtime coach Kristen Patterson said.
Other coaches are swimmers themselves, including 15-year-old Emily Mayernik and 18-year-old Alyson Mayernik. The sisters say that swim team brings the community together.
“After you swim, you congratulate swimmers on other teams,” Emily said. “You really get to know people from other neighborhoods.”
Alyson said swim meets encourage interaction among children who attend different schools.
“Swimmers from public and private schools get together,” Alyson said.
Swimmers competed each of the strokes, individual medleys, medley relays and freestyle relays.
Thirteen-year-old Sarah Kocher enjoys relays the most.
“Relays are my favorite because you have to work with your team to win,” Sarah said.
The audience of parents, coaches and swimmers was the most engaged in relay events.
“The little kids cheer for everyone, even if they don’t know them personally,” Sarah said.
Most of the children participate in the sport for exercise and entertainment.
“I like that you have lots of great friends and coaches,” 11-year-old Cara Setzer said. “It’s really fun.”
