MOORESVILLE – Visitors had a chance May 3 to sit on the LangTree Lake Norman Apartments deck overlooking a sparkling pond, and wonder who could have conceived such a grand vision of a living, working and shopping complex.
Steve Welly is the man behind the dream. Originally from Ohio, his company, R L West seized the opportunity in 2008 to create the development.
“I saw a lot of potential in the LangTree property – how it was situated on a lake with Fortune 500 companies in the area. It’s a business friendly and growing community.”
LangTree Lake Norman will fold out in four phases. The first phase, which debuted on May 3, showcased the LangTree apartments and retail stores, with three other phases in the offing.
Located on 150 Landings Drive, the luxury apartments have built in amenities such as elevators, granite counters, electronic key fobs, stand-up showers and Roman tubs, and according to Welly, are already 55 percent leased. Monthly rates run from $995 for a 926-square-foot place to $1,775 for a three bedroom /three bath home.
These apartments appeal to two groups of people—25-35-year olds looking for an urban feel by the lake, and empty-nesters ages 60-70 wanting to downsize in comfort. Welly’s company, R L West, works with some of the larger local corporate offices such as Lowes and Ingersoll Rand.

With a small grocery store, medical offices and retail shopping, leaving is definitely optional.
For those who are already residents they can enjoy the Orchid Spa, Bacchus Wines & Tapas Bar, Sun Up Café and Coffee, Lipp, the Swell Shop, and Fab´rik. An eyewear store, full service hair salon, and ice cream shop will be opening on the heels of these stores.
Starting in late fall, the next phase will break out office and medical office square footage, with Novant Health to be a main tenant. Phase two will have a medical office component, general office space, and more retail. The facilities will be located between Langtree Road and the current parking deck.
In Phase 3 a DoubleTree Hotel will be added with 20,000 square feet convention center off of Mecklyn Road. Also in this phase will be upscale restaurants as well as high-end retail. The top three floors of the building that will house the hotel will be upscale condominium homes in one, two and three bedrooms.
The final phase will include a movie theater and is slotted to begin late next year.
Currently, all housing is rental but condos will be built on top of the DoubleTree Hotel, a new concept in construction. A luxury steak house will be finding a home at Langtree, along with Sky Café, (an ice cream and sandwich shop), Asian Hibachi Grill and Cocktail Lounge, and the Kilted Buffalo, (a innovative pub and barbershop).
Welly plans to have multiple turn lanes from Mecklyn Road into Langtree.
Welly operates a lea small staff and plans other projects down the road but this is by far his biggest venture. The developer claims there aren’t a lot of developments like LangTree Lake Norman in the country but says the closest comparison would be Easton in Columbus, Ohio.
Birkdale in Huntersville might be a second, but Welly says Birkdale has more “big box” stores and his retail will feature more small boutique type stores.
