HUNTERSVILLE – Latta Plantation offers several themed summer day camps for children on its 1,342-acre nature preserve. They are as follows:

• Civil War Soldier Camp – Children, ages 8-12, are mustered into the Union and Confederate armies to experience life as Civil War soldiers. Relive the war through a week of drills, battles, hikes and farm programs. Campers get to keep items use during the camp, including a replica musket, kepi and haversack. The week ends with a battle engagement and graduation ceremony. Offered 9 a.m.-3 p.m. July 21-24 or Aug. 4-7. The camp costs $175. • 53rd Call to Arms Camp – Children, ages 13-14, who have graduated from the Civil War Soldier Camp can participate in this advanced Civil War camp. Experience strategic battle planning, tacticals in the woods, fire starting with flint and steel, and campfire cooking. Offered 9 a.m.-3 p.m. July 14-17. The camp costs $175. • Revolutionary War Soldier Camp – Children, ages 8-12, can relive the American Revolution as a patriot or loyalist during a week of drills, battles and lessons about soldier life. • Miss Jane’s Academy – Girls, ages 8-12, go back in time to see what life was like for women in the 19th century. The Civil War camp offers hands-on activities, including spying, making fans, sewing, open-hearth cooking and English country dancing. Each girl will receive an apron, bonnet and T-shirt to keep. • Mini Farm Camp – Children, ages 4-5, learn about farm life through hands-on farm activities, crafts, games and interaction with livestock. Campers will meet the Latta animals, including chickens, pigs, sheep, goats, a cow, mule and horse. Offered 9 a.m.-noon June 3-5 or Aug. 12-14. The camp costs $60. Jr. Farm Camp – Children, ages 6-8, learn and participate in farm chores, animal care, natural plants and medicines. They also get up close to a variety of farm animals. • Farm Camp – Children, ages 9-12, learn about all things farming in a hands-on camp. Campers learn to care for various farm animals, as well as where food comes from and how to survive on a 19th century farm. Offered 9 a.m.-3 p.m. July 7-10. The camp costs $175. • Advanced Farm Camp – Children, ages 12-17, learn all things farming through labor-intensive work and training. The course includes animal husbandry, historic natural farming techniques and woodworking. The camp is designed for those with a serious interest in learning about farming, animals and agriculture, as well as those who have a future interest in veterinary medicine.
