Board changes road to Sandy Shore Lane

CORNELIUS — The street connecting Torrence Chapel Road and John Gamble Road, formerly called Country Club Lane, is now Sandy Shore Lane.

Town commissioners considered naming the road after Frank Vinson. The Vinson family has been a key part of the Torrence Chapel Road area and the Rev. George Frank Vinson Sr. was a pastor in Davidson for 37 years.

Town Manager Anthony Roberts had been tasked with finding a name approved by the five homeowners on the road. Roberts said he received feedback that some didn’t like roads named after people and four out of five agreed to Sandy Shore because it's in keeping with the lake feel.

Town commissioners voted Feb. 24 to make the change to avoid continued confusion with a nearby road of the same name.

Head-on collision kills one

HUNTERSVILLE – A head-on collision on Feb. 20 in the 12500 block of Eastfield Road killed one driver and seriously injured another.

Avis Gabbert, 55, crashed her GMC Envoy into a Ford F-150 driven by Raymundo Flores around 5:30 a.m. after crossing the center line on the highway. Gabbert was pronounced dead at the scene.

Flores and passenger Elva Roman suffered serious, non-life threatening injuries in the crash.

Alcohol and speed were not factors in the accident, officials said. The weather was clear, but it was dark outside.

Flores and Roman were sent to Carolinas Medical Center-Main in Charlotte to be treated for injuries.
