Huskies on a roll

CORNELIUS – Hough High’s boys soccer team maintained its MECKA 4A conference lead with a 3-1 victory against West Charlotte on Sept. 23.

C.J. Bradley scored two goals for the Huskies, and Andrew Sutherland scored one. Michael Basnett had two assists, and Sam Tendler added one assist.

Hough is 8-4 overall and 5-0 in conference games.


Massey invited to national combine

HUNTERSVILLE – Lake Norman Charter’s Jake Massey, a junior linebacker, has been selected for the Blue-Grey All-American National Combine on Jan. 11-12 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla.

The combine is an invitation-only event consisting of 250 football players from across the country.  

The top performers at the combine will be invited to the 2015 All-American North-South Bowl in Tampa or the East-West Bowl in Dallas, Texas.

Massey leads Lake Norman Charter (5-0) with 43 tackles.


Tennis event at River Run   

DAVIDSON – The 11th Annual Jill Lake/River Run Pro-Am Tennis Tournament will be held Oct. 5-6 at River Run Country Club.

The tournament pairs tennis professionals from the Southern U.S. with River Run’s ranked amateur players. More than 80 players are scheduled to participate.

Round-robin matches will be from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Oct. 5. The pro-am finals will be Oct. 6. Admission is free.

“Spectators will be able to watch top-level tennis being played by pros that have competed on the ATP World Tour and at the top collegiate level,” said George Husk, River Run’s tennis director. “Some of the participating pros have played at Wimbledon and in the U.S., French and Australian Opens.”


Hough golfers are dominant

CORNELIUS – Hough High’s girls golf team, after three MECKA 4A conference meets, has a commanding 60-stroke lead.

The Huskies’ 375 score is well ahead of Mallard Creek (435), Concord Robinson (437), North Mecklenburg (487) and Hopewell (504).

Hough’s Bailey Jones and Tessa Young are tied for the conference’s individual scoring lead with a 40.3 average (in nine-hole competitions).

Hough’s Renee Janis, Mallard Creek’s Taylor Scovel and Robinson’s Meredith Julian are tied for third place with a 44 scoring average, followed by Hough’s Natalie Cleveland (45.33) and Hopewell’s Reina Pozo (45.7)


Knights move above  .500

BELMONT – Lake Norman Charter’s boys soccer team improved to 4-1 in the Big South 2A/3A conference with a 3-2 victory at South Point on Sept. 23.

The Knights took an early lead by goals by Will Silva (assisted by Justin Gannaway) and Christian Hall (assisted by Will Silva).  Stephen Behnke later added the third goal for the Knights, who are 6-5 overall.


Davidson soccer ends skid

DAVIDSON – The Davidson College women’s soccer team snapped an eight-game winless streak with a 1-0 victory against Charlotte in double-overtime Sept. 22.  

Davidson’s Jenni Isaac corralled a loose ball at midfield and ripped a shot from 25 yards away. Goalkeeper Alex Kubrick got her hands on the ball, but it trickled in after the teams had played 102 minutes and 32 seconds of scoreless soccer.

Davidson is 1-5-3 and Charlotte slipped to 5-3. Davidson goalkeeper Rachel Locke earned her fourth shutout of the year by stopping four shots. The Wildcats had a 15-10 shot advantage and had a 4-2 edge on corners.


Carkhuff sets passing records

CHARLOTTE – Davidson College senior quarterback Jonathan Carkhuff threw for a school-record 464 yards, but the Wildcats lost 35-22 to Johnson C. Smith in non-conference football Sept. 21 at Irwin Belk Complex.

Davidson (0-3) was the first to score, but Johnson C. Smith (3-0) scored the next four touchdowns to take control of the game. The Golden Bulls countered Carkhuff’s prolific passing by sacking him 13 times for minus-93 yards. Additionally, the Wildcats turned the ball over on downs twice in the red zone and were penalized 11 times for 127 yards.

Carkhuff completed 26 of 39 passes for 464 yards and two touchdowns, becoming Davidson’s career passing leader with 9,531 yards.

He also moved past current head coach and 2003 graduate Paul Nichols into second place on Davidson’s career touchdown list with his 51st and 52nd touchdown passes.


LN Charter volleyball jumps to first place

HUNTERSVILLE – Lake Norman Charter’s volleyball team improved to 7-0 in Big South 2A/3A competition with a 25-23, 25-20, 25-14 victory against North Gaston on Sept. 19. The Knights (11-2) were led by service aces by Jena Peppercorn (three aces), Korrine Belfield (nine kills), Julie Newell (seven kills, 21 digs) and Jessi Harris (34 digs).
