DAVIDSON – Summit Coffee plans to open a second location at Davidson College in the fall that will serve as a coffeehouse, pub and restaurant.

The second location will serve students, staff and guests in its own building on campus, assuming the space formerly occupied by the Davidson College Outpost.

"When we imagined a coffeehouse/pub opening on the Davidson College campus, we always had in the back of our mind Summit Coffee as the prototype that we should try and emulate," said Tom Shandley, vice president for student life and dean of Students at Davidson College.

Summit plans to open the new, unnamed location seven days a week, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, with an expanded brunch menu on the weekends. The shop will also offer a full coffee and espresso setup, a smoothie bar, as well as several wines and draft beers.

Summit will employ 10-12 staff for the new space, a combination of students and non-students.

Tim and Brian Helfrich, owners of Summit Coffee and Davidson College alumni, will own the venture.

“We hope to bring all the things Summit is passionate about -- great coffee, live music, good beer, strong community -- to our new location,” Brian Helfrich said. “At the same time, we will work with the students to identify what they want the space to be. We anticipate great synergy in this pursuit.”
