DAVIDSON – Green Drinks Lake Norman is back again from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Aug. 29 at Campania Café in Davidson. This month’s session will include a discussion on food, farmer’s markets, organics and agri-business.
Green Drinks Lake Norman brings interesting speakers and topics, introduces new and growing companies and builds the network to include more professionals in the green, energy and sustainable sectors.
This month’s speaker is Courtney Spear, the manager of the Davidson Farmer’s Market, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, delivering a year-round producer-only Market to the community.
With close to 40 vendors and 24,000 visitors annually, the market provides a public meeting place for people to gather and enjoy locally grown foods, education, special events, chef demonstrations and music.
Her primary role is to create a vibrant and welcoming food hub through enhanced vendor relations, community outreach and customer commerce.
Spear joined the market in summer 2011. Prior to that, she worked as a non-profit association manager for IMI Association Executives.
She graduated from UNC-Charlotte receiving a bachelor of arts in Sociology. She resides in Davidson with husband Matt Spear (Davidson ’94) and three sons, Nick, 15, Jack, 13 and Beck, 5.
Cabarrus County and the NC Cooperative Extension – Cabarrus Center have partnered to develop the Elma C. Lomax Incubator Farm, Concord, NC. The farm works much like a business incubator.
Individuals interested in starting a farm-based business can enroll in the program which provides classroom instruction on the business of farming in Cabarrus County as well as hands–on experience on the farm.
Participants in the program develop and manage their own agriculture business while receiving guidance from staff and seasoned farmers.
Lomax Incubator Farm students have been attending the Davidson Farmer's Market for years. Currently the Davidson Farmer’s Market has one Lomax student farmer and three graduates that now have their own farm businesses.
