DAVIDSON – Huntersville resident Gary Wheeler is known for making positive and inspirational films for families. When the opportunity arose to direct his latest film close to home, he was thrilled.

He selected Davidson for its great location and because it has the look and feel of a scenic town with a sense of community necessary for the story.

It gave him the opportunity to showcase the community in a positive light to a broad television audience.

The film “Teachers,” scripted by Rhonda Baracka, centers on a group of high school students, parents and teachers who come together to inspire a divided community to rally and save a once-popular high school that is scheduled to close.

Wheeler selected Lake Norman Christian School, formerly the Davidson IB School and Davidson Elementary School, on South Street close to downtown Davidson, as the backdrop of the film.

“This film is a perfect combination of stars that have been in many popular shows and films,” Wheeler said.

Loretta Devine will play a guidance counselor, Salli Richardson-Whitfield, the principal and Esai Morales, a parent. They will be filming with many extras from the area and an all-local crew.

“This is the first filming experience for many of the extras,” Wheeler said. “What a wonderful way to learn about this industry in their own home region. It has been a rewarding experience for me working with all of them.”

“Teachers” is in its second week of filming and has one more week left in Davidson. The film is being produced by Dave Eubanks and Keith Neal with Eric Tomosunas of Swirl Films.

It is scheduled to be shown as a celebration for the local talent at Our Town Cinemas this fall and will be broadcast on the UP network.

Wheeler is a multi-award winning international filmmaker who has produced a number of motion picture and television productions around the world.

He is the founder and president of the North Carolina-based Level Path Productions.

Wheeler’s past films include the Emmy-nominated television feature “The Heart of Christmas,” based on a song by Grammy Award-nominated artist Matthew West.
