CHARLOTTE – Davidson Day quarterback Will Grier, a rising senior who has led the Patriots to two straight state championships, did interviews and filmed promotional spots Thursday as part of WSOC-TV’s “Big 22″ team.
The television station, in cooperation with OrthoCarolina, named its top 22 high school football standouts and invited them to the Carolina Panthers practice facility. WSOC-TV airs “High School Football Extra” at 11:35 p.m. Fridays (beginning Aug. 23).
Grier, who committed to play at the University of Florida, led the nation in passing yards (5,785) and touchdown passes (69) last fall. Both marks also set state records, as Grier led the Patriots to a second straight state championship.
Grier also was named the N.C. Gatorade Player of the Year, and was on the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association and N.C. Associated Press all-state teams.
He completed 324 of 414 passes (78 percent), and threw 11 two-point conversions. Grier also led the Patriots in rushing (813 yards) and scored eight touchdowns.
He was named the national football player of the year on the MaxPreps Small Schools All-American team.
