Ewell Washington Hopper Jr.

CHARLOTTE – Funeral services for Ewell Washington Hopper Jr., 88, will be held privately.

He was born July 21, 1924, in York, SC, to the late Ewell Washington and Maggie Mae Paire Hopper Sr. Hopper was a member of the U.S. Navy. He died June 2 at his home.

Survivors include wife, Marion Overby Hopper; son, Douglas T. Hopper and wife, Debra, of Huntersville; daughters, Susan J. Hopper and Carol D. Rogers; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Gaynell Hoffman Menscer

DAVIDSON – Funeral services for Gay Nell Hoffman Menscer, 84, will be held on June 8, 2013, at 11 a.m. at St. Therese Catholic Church, 217 Brawley School Road, Mooresville, NC 28117.

She was born Nov. 8, 1928, in Hiddenite, to the late Mr. Hoffman and Edna Mae Hines Crickmore. Menscer graduated from Duke University. She was a registered nurse for more than 40 years and an instructor at Emory School of Nursing. Menscer died May 29 at her home.

Survivors include her daughters, Mary Ann Carlson and husband, Kurt, Deborah Williams and husband, Billy, and Mary Beth Menscer; and grandchildren, Jason and Patrick Spruell, and Matthew and Jonathan Williams.

Karen Miller Johnson

DAVIDSON – Funeral services for Karen Miller Johnson, 73, were held June 6, 2013, at Davidson Presbyterian Church.

She was born Dec. 9, 1939, in Cleveland, Ohio, to the late Earl and Mary Baker Miller. Johnson worked for Edison Community College in Fort Myers, Fla., First Baptist Church of Cape Coral, Fla. and as a pet sitter in Davidson. She died May 31 at her home.

Survivors include her husband, Bill Johnson; sons, Scott and wife, Alisa, and Greg and wife, Jodi; granddaughters, Viala and Dylan Johnson; sister, Gail Rollin; and mother-in-law, Evelyn Ferguson.

Ridgely W. Vane III 

HUNTERSVILLE – Funeral services for Ridgely “Rick” W. Vane III, 62, will be held June 8, 2013, at 2 p.m., at Assurance United Methodist Church, 700 Mount Holly-Huntersville Road, Huntersville, NC 28078.

He was born Jan. 13, 1951, in Munich, Germany. Vane served in the U.S. Army for 10 years. He worked for Beck Mercedes and then as a Transportation Security Administration Agent for the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport. He died May 28 at Carolinas Medical Center.

Survivors include his wife Monica Vane; sons, Jamie Vane and wife, Christi, and Justin Vane; and granddaughter, Noelle Vane.

Carol Ann Fleming

HUNTERSVILLE – Funeral services for Carol Ann Fleming, 53, were held May 28, 2013, at James Funeral Home.

She was born Oct. 9, 1959, in Espyville Pa., to the late Michael and Vera Lebhaft. Fleming worked as an officer for the Central Intelligence Agency. Fleming died May 27 at her home.

Survivors include her son, Jonathon Carmichael and wife, LeeAnn, of Cornelius; siblings, Michael, Cathy, Sylvia and Sandy; grandchildren, Jacob and Joshua; and step-mother Peggy Lebhaft.

Addie Flowers Vance

HUNTERSVILLE – Funeral services for Addie Flowers Vance, 83, were held May 28, 2013, at Hopewell Presbyterian Church.

She was born March 27, 1930, in Darlington, S.C., to the late Edward Ernest Flowers and Juanita Odom Flowers. Vance graduated from Thomasboro High School in Charlotte. She worked as a tax advisor for H&R Block and later started her own tax consulting business, which she ran for 12 years. Vance died May 25 in WashingtonN.C.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Liston Flowers and brother-in-law, Joe Tolen.

Survivors include her husband, Merton; son, Merton Brice Vance Jr. and wife, Tricia; daughter, Belinda Vance Cowell and husband, David; grandchildren, Sara Elizabeth Cowell, Ryan Vance Cowell and Rebecca Harte Vance; sisters, Betty Flowers Starnes and husband, Clyde, and Barbara Flowers Tolen; and brothers, Ed Flowers and wife, Jackie, Bert Flowers and wife, Jacque, and William Flowers and Judy.
