CORNELIUS – The Cornelius Town Board unanimously approved the operating budget for fiscal year 2014 on June 17.
The budget totals $17,574,867 with the tax rate of 24 cents, the same as fiscal year 2013.
Operating expenses include a $95,000 increase in garbage costs, $52,000 to fund an update to the land-use plan, $31,000 to fund the lease for the art center and $28,000 for state-mandated unemployment insurance.
Capital expenditures include $315,000 for sidewalk connections, $200,000 for the design of the diverging diamond bridge on Exit 28, $185,000 for the Westmoreland interchange and $130,000 for the Northcross Drive extension.
Other big-dollar expenses include $700,000 for the new phase of Robbins Park, $1.16 million for synthetic turf soccer fields at Bailey Road Park with $800,000 coming from a private partnership with various soccer clubs in the area, $400,000 for fire department breathing equipment and $158,000 for police, parks and fire operation vehicles.
