Hough High to host benefit girls soccer tournament

CORNELIUS – The Hough High girls soccer team will host the second annual

Cookies for Kids’ Cancer Invitational on April 20.

The tournament is organized to raise money for pediatric cancer research through the Cookies for Kids’ Cancer charity. For information, go to cookiesforkidscancer.org. The event will include four soccer matches and a bake sale throughout the day.

Admission costs $7. The schedule: Jacksonville vs. Catholic Catholic, noon; Lake Norman vs. Providence, 2 p.m.; Greensoro Grimsley vs. Indian Trail Sun Valley, 4 p.m.;
Winston-Salem Mt. Tabor vs. Hough, 6 p.m.

 

 

Two Knights win track events

CONCORD – Lake Norman Charter won two individual events at a six-team track and field meet at Concord Cannon on April 5. Holly Miller won the girls 400-meter run in a time of one minute, 7.67 seconds. Sean Powers won the boys 800-meter run in 2:02.71.

 

 

LN Charter soccer team is on a hot streak

HUNTERSVILLE – The Lake Norman Charter girls soccer team extended its winning streak to six with a 7-0 victory against Gastonia Highland in a Southern Piedmont 1A/2A conference match April 8. The Knights improved to 7-2-2 overall and 6-0 in conference.

Rina Leonidas scored two goals, and Carolina Sanchez, Carolyn Huddy, Riley Kane, Taylor Gilbert and Courtney Hill scored one each for Lake Norman Charter. Huddy and Rachel Quest shared the shutout as goalkeepers.

Lake Norman Charter is No. 9 in the state’s Class 1A poll.

 

SouthLake Christian wins spring break baseball tournament

ALBEMARLE – The SouthLake Christian baseball team outscored its opponents 29-11 in three games to win the championship in the inaugural Yadkin Diamond Baseball Classic hosted by Albemarle High last week.

SouthLake defeated West Columbus 7-1, Albemarle 11-7 and Voyager Academy 11-3.

 

 

Davidson attacker wins player of the week award

DAVIDSON – A record-setting weekend by Davidson College lacrosse attacker Ann Fucigna helped her pick up her second Choice Hotels Big South Conference Offensive Player of the Week for games April 1-7.

Fucigna, a junior, led Davidson to a 2-0 week en route to setting the program’s career mark for goals with her 135th on April 5 against Campbell (an 18-3 victory) and tied the game record for goals by netting eight in a 19-3 victory against Presbyterian on April 7.

Fucigna has a team-best 43 goals.

 

 

Davidson baseball attempts to break attendance record

DAVIDSON – Davidson’s baseball team will attempt to break a home attendance record at its 6 p.m. game April 19 against UNC Greensboro. It’s the beginning of a seven-game homestand at Wilson Field, and the first game has been dubbed “Davidson Baseball Bayou Bash.”

Free boiled crawfish, corn, potatoes, and sausage will be available for the first 1,000 people. One fan will win a free iPad and another will win free Coca-Cola for a year.

 

 

Local skiers compete in national event

HUNTERSVILLE – Seven local skiers with the Charlotte Ski & Snowboard racing team competed in the 2013 NASTAR National Championship, an amateur ski racing event, in Aspen, Colo. on March 22-24. The team finished third among 89 teams.

Alex Jonker (Huntersville) finished first in the female 18-20 (age) “Bronze” division. Tricia Wall (Huntersville) was second and Jessica Starr (Huntersville) was third in the female 35-39 “Gold” division. Caroline Jonker (Huntersville) finished third in the female 50-54 “Bronze” division.

David Stewart (Davidson) finished seventh in the male 40-44 “Platinum” division. Henk Jonker (Huntersville) was fourth in the male 50-54 “Bronze” division. Mike Dunn (Cornelius) was seventh in the male 50-54 “Silver” division.

The local racers compete regionally throughout the season (December to March).  Prior to Nationals the CSSC racing team competed in nine races over five weekends at mountain resorts in North Carolina and West Virginia. The Charlotte racers competed against 12 other regional racing teams including Raleigh and Greensboro. The Charlotte Ski & Snowboard Club’s racing team finished third for the season, just four points out of second place.

Fishing tournament at Lake Norman

HUNTERSVILLE – The Bassmasters 2013 Carhartt College Series Eastern Regional fishing tournament, sponsored by Visit Lake Norman, will be held April 12-13 on Lake Norman.
