MOORESVILLE – Pine Lake Prep football coach Jay Poag, the first coach in the program’s history, resigned Wednesday.

Poag, who took over in January 2012, said he left “in order for my family to pursue other opportunities.”

Pine Lake Prep planned to play a varsity schedule last season, but altered those plans in July (a month before the season) because of the team’s lack of depth and experience. The Pride fielded a junior varsity team in 2012.

The school will field a varsity team this summer and be part of the Southern Piedmont 1A conference in the N.C. High School Athletic Association, with Bessemer City, Cherryville, Community School of Davidson, Gastonia Highland, Thomas Jefferson Academy and Lincoln Charter.

Poag’s announcement was posted on the school website, and in part read “I offer my sincere thanks to each of you for your support and involvement over the last 1½ years.  I feel like the program has a strong foundation and will do great things in the future. I will always look back on my time spent at PLP with fond memories.”
