Tim Queen has shaped a high-school swimming dynasty in a very short time.

Queen’s girls team at Hough High won its second straight N.C. 4A swimming championship, a lofty accomplishment for a school that’s only been around three years. He is the Herald Weekly Girls Swimming Coach of the Year.

“To see kids work so hard and reach their goals is always satisfying,” said Queen, who has won eight state championships (six girls; two boys) at Hough and North Mecklenburg High. “All our relays swam well and we had three divers in the top eight.”

Queen’s squad was led by sophomore Emily Allen, who set two state records in winning the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events. Hough’s relay teams also set records in the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays, and Jessica Merritt won the 200-yard freestyle.

The Huskies also had third-place finishes by Heather Merritt, Jessica Merritt and Karly Adams and a fourth-place (Ally Dupay) in individual events.
