HUNTERSVILLE – This morning at 9:15 a.m. the school resource officer at North Mecklenburg High School received information from CMPD that a 15-year-old student on the campus may be in possession of a handgun, according to a press release from the Huntersville Police Department.
The resource officer and school personnel made contact with the student outside a classroom.
While the SRO was talking to the student, the student turned and ran.
At that time the SRO called for assistance.
As a precaution, North Mecklenburg High School, Blythe Elementary School and Alexander Middle School were placed on lockdown.
After a foot chase on the campus the suspect, a juvenile, was apprehended in the wooded area across the street from the high school.
A semi-automatic handgun was located.
The juvenile was transported to the Huntersville Police Department and the investigation is ongoing at this time.
