Local teams win Holden Classic
HUNTERSVILLE – The North Mecklenburg High boys’ basketball team and the Lake Norman Charter girls’ team won championships at the Leroy Holden Classic tournament at North Mecklenburg.
North Mecklenburg (5-0) crushed Mooresville 88-41 in the opening round and beat Cox Mill 75-67 in the title game. Lake Norman Charter’s girls (2-0) opened with a 61-39 romp against Mooresville. Lake Norman Charter beat North Mecklenburg 47-44 in the final.
Close loss for Hough hoops
CHARLOTTE – The Hough High boys’ basketball team lost 56-54 to Providence Day in the championship game of the Charlotte Hoops Challenge on Nov. 30.
The Huskies (2-1) were led by Luke Maye (15 points, 17 rebounds), Tucker Thompson (15 points) and Jacqueaz Jackson (10 points).
Providence Day improved to 5-0. Hough beat Gaston Day 58-54 in the semifinals behind Maye’s 29 points.
Cannon students excel in fall
CONCORD – Nine Cannon School athletes from the lake area earned honors in fall sports.
Annie and Kate Collom, sisters from Davidson, were all-conference and all-state as they helped Cannon win its third straight girls’ golf title. Seniors Grant Gossage, of Davidson, and Larkin Felker, of Cornelius, earned all-conference in boys’ soccer.
Steven Bennett, a junior from Davidson, and Carrie Schauder, a sophomore from Huntersville, earned all-conference in boys’ cross country. Jena Metwalli, a sophomore from Davidson who set two school records, was all-conference and all-state in girls’ cross country.
Kate Beckman, a junior from Cornelius, was all-conference in girls’ tennis. McKinley Riley, a freshman from Davidson, was all-conference and all-state.
