95-year-old wins Habitat fundraising contest
CORNELIUS – Jack Hart raised more than $7,000 to support Our Towns Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build efforts, earning the 95-year-old the title “Biggest Cheese in Town.”
The campaign challenges local leaders to raise at least $1,000 for Our Towns Habitat. Hart, a longtime ReStore volunteer, sold watercolor paintings at an art sale in July and conducted a barn sale later in the summer to raise the money.
“Jack is an inspiration to all of us,” said Cindy Lazes, event coordinator for Our Towns Habitat. “His ‘can do’ attitude is exactly what Women Build is all about.”
Becky Johnson, with Ameriprise Financial Services in Cornelius, placed second. Bill Kenney, of Kilwin’s Chocolates, came in third. John Ballas, of Ballas Chiropractic, and Leslie Mann, with Mann Creative Partners, also exceeded $1,000.
“I was determined to beat the competitors this year,” Hart said, “Bill Kenney and Dr. Ballas are great guys, but they both beat me two years in a row, and I wasn’t going to let that happen again!”
Proceeds from the contest will be transformed into a decent, affordable home for a local family through Our Towns Habitat for Humanity Women Build program in spring 2014.
