Schools win tech grants

CHARLOTTE – Hough High and Cornelius Elementary were among eight schools to receive $150,000 in technology grants through Belk’s Rocking the Belk Bowl Contest.

The contest offered schools in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district the chance to win technology grants by creating and displaying educational and Belk Bowl-themed designs on bulletin boards or rocks.

Hough was among three schools to win $25,000 in technology grants. Hough will also receive an allotment of tickets to the Belk Bowl game Dec. 28 at Bank of America Stadium.

Cornelius Elementary was among five schools to win $15,000 technology grants.


Students competes in national debate event

HUNTERSVILLE – Alex Pope reached the quarterfinal round in two events, impromptu speaking and poetry, at a national debate and speech tournament held recently in Fairfax, Va.

Pope, a member of the North Meck debate and speech team, finished in 80th place. She competed alone against teams of students from more than 100 schools up and down the eastern seaboard, accordng to coach Christopher Rocca.
