Grier named N.C.’s best player

DAVIDSON – Davidson Day quarterback Will Grier was named the Gatorade North Carolina Football Player of the Year for the second straight season. The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the field.

Grier led the Patriots (12-1) to a third consecutive N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association state championship this season. The senior threw for 4,989 yards and 77 touchdowns on 314-of-446 passing (70.4 percent).

Grier has a 3.40 weighted grade point average. A member of his school’s Spanish Club, he has also donated his time as a youth football instructor and volunteered on behalf of a youth literacy-outreach program as well as the Pop Warner Challenger Flag Football League.

 

Tennis association wins award

HUNTERSVILLE – The Lake Norman Tennis Association will receive the 2013 Tennis Team Event/Program of the Year Award at the USTA North Carolina Annual Awards Luncheon on Jan. 26 in Pinehurst. The award is in recognition of hosting the North Carolina 18+ Adult League State Championships last June.

More than 1,300 of the top competitors from across the state traveled to compete in the four-day tournament, which was played at 12 sites, including area clubs, parks and high schools across Lake Norman. Tournament organizers also raised $15,000 in sponsorships, earmarked for area youth programs and to help upgrade local facilities.

  

Davidson women lead conference

DAVIDSON – Laura Murray's first career double-double (24 points, 11 rebounds) led the Davidson College women’s basketball team to a 73-66 victory against Furman in a Southern Conference game Dec. 10 at Belk Arena.

Davidson improved to 2-0 in conference plan and 5-6 overall. Davidson’s next game will be at home at 1 p.m. Dec. 21 against Charlotte.
