CORNELIUS – The Cornelius Police Department obtained warrants against a suspect officials said drove into a utility pole, causing a part of town to temporarily lose power.

A patrol officer with the Cornelius Police Department heard a large crash around 9:30 p.m. Nov. 21 while on patrol near Catawba Avenue and Main Street.  

Officers found a single vehicle crash involving a black Chevrolet Silverado truck that struck a utility pole and tree on Meridian Street near Catawba Avenue.  The driver fled the scene before emergency personnel arrived.  

The Catawba County Sheriff's Office told police that the suspect, Kenneth Ryckeley, was being transported to Carolinas Medical Center Lincoln for a serious leg injury. He was transferred to CMC-Main in Charlotte due to the extent of his injuries.

Police obtained warrants on Ryckeley for reckless driving and felony hit and run. Officials intended to arrest him upon release.
