HUNTERSVILLE – Beatrice Langley Merwin, 84, died Oct. 9, 2013, at Levine and Dickson Hospice House.

She was born March 18, 1929, in Newark, N.J., to the late William T. Langley and Beatrice Comito.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Merwin; and son, Craig Gunn.

Survivors include her daughters, Celeste Richards and Vanessa Gourdine; brothers, William and Robert Langley; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

CORNELIUS – William Russell Washam, 86, died Oct. 9, 2013, at Huntersville Oaks.

He was born Dec. 6, 1926, in Iredell County, to the late George and Beulah Howard Washam.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel.

Survivors include his sons, Bill and wife, Lucia, Jerry and wife, Sharon, Alan, Fred and Scott and wife, Cindy; sister, Martha Bradford; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

HUNTERSVILLE – Thomas Brandon Pirtle, 40, died Oct. 8, 2013, at his home.

He was born July 9, 1973, in Palm Beach, Fla., to Phyllis Elaine Calvert and Dennis David Pirtle.

Survivors include his parents; wife, Sarah; son, Samuel; daughter, Emma; sister, Tiffany Pirtle; and grandmother, Pearl Calvert.

Blanche Emily Knox Parker

DAVIDSON – Blanche Emily Knox Parker, 96, died Oct. 7, 2013, at Levine and Dickson Hospice House.

She was born Aug. 28, 1917, in Davidson, to the late Adrian and Connie Dunn Knox.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Parker Sr.; brothers, Parks, Vernon and Jack Knox; sister, Merle Knox Washam; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

Survivors include her sons, Charles Warner Parker Jr. and wife, Bonnie and Adrian Bruce Parker and wife, Laura; daughters, Janice Parker Gregory and husband, Bob, Glenda Parker Jones and Stella Parker Stroud and husband, Tim; sisters, Clara Knox Byrum and Connie Knox Collins; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Clifton Eugene Shumake

MOORESVILLE – Clifton Eugene Shumake, 85, died Oct. 7, 2013, at the Brian Center.

He was born June 28, 1928, in Mooresville, to the late Cranford and Carrie Shumake.

Shumake was a weaver for Burlington Industries for more than 20 years. After retirement, he was the owner and operator of Gene’s Taxidermy and also worked as an animal control officer for the Town of Cornelius.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Arney Shumake; and brothers, Dwight Shumake and Otis LeVan.

Survivors include his sons, Michael Shumake and wife, Donna, and Ricky Shumake Sr. and wife, Carol Sue; brother, Melvin Shumake; sisters, Jo Rita Archie, Jackie McKnight and Margie Meadows; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

HUNTERSVILLE – Barbara Ann Hager Gentry, 69, died Oct. 6, 2013, at Sherrills Ford Hospice House.

She was born Nov. 16, 1943, in Mecklenburg County, to the late Johnnie Marion Hager Sr. and Vergie Brown Hager.

Gentry worked in the textile industry.

Survivors include her brothers, Johnny Hager Jr. and David Hager; sisters, Shirley Clark, Peggy Moore and Clarine Moore; five nephews; and nine nieces.

HUNTERSVILLE – Frances Dorothy Hanes Gruszeczka, 85, died Oct. 6, 2013, at her home.

She was born Sept. 28, 1928, in Buda, Ill., to the late Joseph H. Haynes and Pauline Boley Haynes.

Gruszeczka worked as an X-ray technician.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph John Gruszeczka Sr.

Survivors include her sons, Gregory, Joseph Jr., James and Jan Gruszeczka; sisters, Patricia Kitchen and Elizabeth Gruszeczka; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Mahmood Ali Kacho

HUNTERSVILLE – Mahmood Ali Kacho, 53, died Oct. 4, 2013, at his home.

He was born Oct. 28, 1959, in Pakistan, to Hamid Ali Khan and the late Akhtar Khanum.

Kacho worked as a cab driver in New York City for the Yellow Cab Company and was the owner of a grocery store in Hickory.

Survivors include his father; sisters, Mahboob Ali Kacho and Shireen Eason, and Dr. Kaneez; and three brothers.
