Students on the North Mecklenburg High School Debate and Speech team placed fourth overall at a tournament held Jan. 19 in Simpsonville, S.C.

The team competed against approximately 20 schools and won the “percentage” trophy, awarded because almost half the team placed in different events.

Here’s a roundup of how some students performed:

• Seniors Abby Auerbach and Irfan Mekic placed second in public forum debate with a 4-0 record; teammates Erik Thorsheim and Nick Macri placed sixth with a 3-1 record; and sophomores James Haberberger and Abhi Kulgod took seventh, also with a 3-1 record.

• Seniors Colleen Watson and Taylor Barrett placed third and fourth, respectively, in original oratory;

• Colleen Watson and her brother, Jack, took fourth in duo interpretation and the team of juniors Camara Hill and Antonio Rivera placed fifth in the same event. Jack Watson also took third in declamation.

Nine members of the team will attend the national level Barkley Forum tournament Jan. 25-27 at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga.
