Detectives of the Huntersville Police Department launched an investigation on Jan. 15 after CMS Law Enforcement made them aware of allegations that a Hopewell High School Volunteer Swim Coach, David Mackenzie Haynes, 24, was engaged in a sexual relationship with a student.

According to the department's press release, during the investigation probable cause was developed indicating that the relationship did occur.

Investigators also learned that during one encounter, beer was provided to the juvenile by Haynes.

The encounters did not occur on school property or during school sanctioned events.

Detectives of the Huntersville Police Department obtained warrants for Haynes on Jan. 16.

He has been charged with three counts of sexual activity with a student because it was determined that he had three separate encounters with the juvenile

He has also been charged with providing a malt beverage to a person less than 21 years of age.
