Editor,

Did you know that we pay our Huntersville mayor and commissioners less than minimum wage? Minimum wage is $7.15 per hour, and our town officials are paid about $5 an hour! That’s unfair and should be an embarrassment to all of us.

We propose paying our mayor $15,000 per year – up from $10,000 – and the Commissioners $7,500 per year – up from $5,000. This would put Huntersville at roughly the same levels at other North Carolina towns our size. The average cost per resident would be about 50 cents a year, less than what most of us put in the red Salvation Army Christmas pots during the holiday season.

Yes, times are tough. But our town officials have families, too. So let’s all show some holiday spirit and call, write or email our mayor, commissioners and town manager at www.huntersville.org and tell them we want them to approve a salary increase for themselves that is at least on a par with their colleagues in other towns.
