CORNELIUS – Michael Basnett scored three goals in Hough High’s 3-1 boys’ soccer victory against Mooresville in an I-MECK 4A conference match Sept. 24. The Huskies (4-5-1) improved to 3-1-1 in conference.
Sam Tendler, Leo Hajrullahu and Brad Waite had assists for Hough, which has won three straight matches and is tied with Hopewell for second place in the conference.
LN Charter girls golf sets scoring record
DENVER – The Lake Norman Charter girls golf team set a school scoring record with a 139 to win a Southern Piedmont 1A/2A match at Cowan’s Ford Country Club on Sept. 24. The Knights were 10 strokes ahead of runner-up East Lincoln High.
Lake Norman Charter was led by senior Maegan Ports, who shot a 41 in the nine-hole competition, sophomore Kaelyn Pack (47) and senior Kayla Thomas (51).
East Lincoln senior Brittany Smith tied Gastonia Highland’s Taylor Shellman each shot 40 to for match medalist honors.
LN Charter soccer is on a roll
HUNTERSVILLE – The Lake Norman Charter boys soccer team extended its winning streak to five with a 6-0 victory against West Lincoln in a Southern Piedmont 1A/2A match Sept. 24.
Stephen Benke and Ryan Jones scored two goals each for the Knights (7-2), and Will Silva and Jean-Claude Brooks scored one. Goalkeepers Christian Hall and Sam Sisson combined for the shutout. The Knights have limited foes to two goals in the past five matches. Lake Norman Charter leads the conference with a 4-0 record.
Register for kids’ Soccer Challenge
HUNTERSVILLE – Boys and girls ages 5-14 are invited to the Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge from 1-3 p.m. Oct. 13 at the St. Mark Elementary School soccer fields.
The competition will include each participant attempting penalty kicks. The soccer goal will be segmented into different scoring zones, and the child with the most points in his or her age group will move on to the next level. The Soccer Challenge is accessible to many kids who may not be able to play a full soccer match or tournament.

Entrants ages 10-14 can advance to district and state competitions. The rain date is Oct. 20 (same time and location).
Davidson Day volleyball leads conference
DAVIDSON – Davidson Day’s volleyball team won two matches this week to retain its lead in the Southern Piedmont Athletic Association. The Patriots are 13-4 overall and 7-0 in conference.
Davidson Day beat United Faith 25-7, 25-6, 25-10 on Sept. 18 behind Kaylyn Brock’s 19 assists and five aces, Emmy Roberts’ seven kills and Kay Funderburk’s five digs. On Sept. 25, Davidson Day beat Statesville Christian 25-14, 25-19, 25-23 behind Taylor Brock’s 13 kills, seven digs and six aces, Jeanine Grabowski’s six kills and four aces, and Kaylyn Brock’s 30 assists.
LN Charter tennis remains unbeaten
HUNTERSVILLE – The Lake Norman Charter girls tennis team improved to 7-0 with a 9-0 sweep against North Lincoln on Sept. 25.
Hannah Archer, Sravya Uppalapati, Mallory Warren, Catherine Onia, Sarah McIntosh and Kennedy Phillips won singles matches for the Knights. Lake Norman Charter will host East Lincoln High at 4 p.m. Sept. 28.
Register for youth basketball
HUNTERSVILLE – Registration for the Huntersville Youth Athletic Association basketball leagues will begin Sept. 29.
Play will be held in age groups (a player’s age as of Dec. 31, 2012) for co-ed play (ages 5 and under); boys 6-7, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13 and 14-17; and girls 6-8, 9-10, 11-13 and 14-17.
Skills assessment sessions will be held for girls in every age group (except the 5-and-unders) the week of Nov. 12.

Hough High to host cheerleader clinic
CORNELIUS – The Hough High cheerleaders will host a cheerleading clinic Sept. 29 for anyone ages 5-13. The clinic will be from 9 a.m.-noon at the school gym, and costs $25. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. Campers should bring a snack and a drink. Each participant will receive free admission to Hough’s home football game on Oct. 5, and be invited to cheer with Hough’s cheerleaders during the third quarter. HUNTERSVILLE – Holm Improvement, a Lake Norman basketball skills improvement program, and Benchwarmers Sports Complex in Mooresville are launching several eight-week basketball classes beginning Oct. 3.
The Wednesday classes include: Women’s basketball fitness class from 9:30-10:45 a.m.; lunch hoops from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.; pre-kindergarten hoops from 1:10-1:45 p.m.; and kindergarten-fourth-grade hoops from 2:40-3:30 p.m.
