North Carolina released its final batch of School Report Cards today for the 2011-12 school year and the Lake Norman area boasts eight of the state’s 278 top schools.

Bailey Middle, Cornelius Elementary, Hough High, Davidson Elementary, Huntersville Elementary, Lincoln Charter, Torrence Creek Elementary and Lake Norman Charter earned Honor School of Excellence designations from the state. This means at least 90 percent of students, as well as students within ethnic and socioeconomic subgroups, scored a level 3 or higher on End of Grade or End of Course tests.

All schools in the area met state academic growth expectations – the amount of academic progress state education officials expect schools to achieve during one school year. This amount varies from school-to-school because it’s based on the school’s previous performance and statewide growth.

Only three schools – J.M. Alexander Middle, Mountain Island Charter and Long Creek Elementary – didn’t meet high growth standards. To meet high growth, schools must meet the expected growth standards and at least 60 percent of students must meet individual growth expectations

Four schools failed to meet all their Annual Measurable Objectives (AMOs). The state divides students within a school or district by subgroups based on race, socio-economic status or disabilities. The state expects certain percentage of students within each group show proficiency on statewide testing.

Schools with a greater amount of diversity, and therefore more AMOs to meet, might have a harder time meeting all their targets. J.M. Alexander, Community of School of Davidson, Hopewell High, North Mecklenburg High and Blythe Elementary fell short last year.

Hough High School boasted the area’s highest graduation rate, graduating more than 95 percent of students. Hopewell and North Mecklenburg high schools graduated 77.3 and 79.6 percent of students respectively.

This will be the last year that the state releases school report cards. The Department of Public Instruction plans to shift to online testing and an A-F rating system.
