MOORESVILLE – The USA National Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Team will train in Mooresville this week, including an open intrasquad game at Lake Norman High on Aug. 11. It’s the team’s final camp before it competes in the 2012 Paralympic Games in London, England beginning Aug. 29.
Team USA is coached by Mooresville resident David Kiley, and has won gold medals in the past two Paralympic Games. Dr. Andrea Woodson-Smith, a professor at N.C. Central University who plays for the Charlotte Rollin’ Bobcats, is from Durham.
Tickets cost $5 for the 7 p.m. scrimmage at Lake Norman High. Proceeds will go toward the cost of team camp. The team has five practices scheduled, all at Lake Norman High and open to the public - 6:30-9 p.m. Aug. 9, noon-1:30 p.m. and 2:30-4 p.m. Aug. 10, and 9:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. Aug. 11.
SouthLake duo commits to colleges
HUNTERSVILLE – Seniors Demitri Allison and Andre Diouf, two of the most prolific athletes in SouthLake Christian Academy’s history, have committed to colleges.
Allison will play football at Elon (N.C.) University next fall. Diouf will play soccer at the University of Central Florida.
The NCAA signing period begins Feb. 6, 2013, for both sports. Allison and Diouf both play for the Eagles fooball team.
Allison was an all-state pick as a junior receiver/defensive back last year. He caught 48 passes for 1,004 yards and 16 touchdowns, rushed for 464 yards and seven touchdowns on 54 carries, made 41 tackles and had six interceptions. Allison also plays basketball for SouthLake.
Diouf, a native of Senegal who plays defensive back, will begin his senior season with school records for interceptions in a career (23) and season (nine in 2011). He plays soccer as a midfielder for the North Mecklenburg Soccer Club and has been an all-star at several camps on the club level.
Hough plans a day of football
HUNTERSVILLE – The Hough High football coaches will host a ‘Moms 101’ clinic at 10 a.m. Aug. 11 in the school library. All new and returning football mothers are invited. There will be a film on the basics of football, including the position each mom’s son is playing. Moms will tour the new locker room, which includes a photo and phrase of each player’s choice at the locker. That will be followed by brunch.
Hough’s Black-and-White scrimmage will be at 7 p.m. at the school stadium.
Register for adult softball
HUNTERSVILLE – Registration is open for the Huntersville Parks and Recreation Department’s fall adult softball league. Games will be at Bradford Park and play is open to men’s and co-ed teams. Individuals can register, too. Individuals without a team will be put on one. Get all your information at the Parks and Recreation office located at 105 Gilead Road.
