SALISBURY — Evan Lucas, of Huntersville, was one of dozens to participate in the National Environmental Summit held July 9-14 at Catawba College.
During the summit, Lucas and other students embarked on a GPS-based navigation course at Catawba College’s 189-acre ecological preserve to learn about biomimicry.

Biomimicry is a “revolutionary new science that studies nature’s best ideas,” said Joy Bolin, assistant biology professor at Catawba and the leader of the biomimicry experience.

The navigation course included stops to examine spider webs, butterfly wings and the chemicals contained in the Black Willow tree.
