The town of Davidson has decided that maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to change the zoning of the Davidson East property after all.
A quick review:
First, let’s make a questionable zoning change to make developing the Davidson East property more difficult and bring on a lawsuit.
Then, let’s recruit a tax-exempt organization to build a mental facility on the property, taking 23 acres off the tax roles.
Then, let’s change the zoning back to the original state and let the owner develop the balance of the land for taxable purposes.
It was shown at the community meeting last week that despite fumbling efforts by the town to demonstrate some economic benefits from the hospital that, in fact, the mental hospital will result in a minimum cost to the town of over a million dollars in lost revenue over the next 10 years.
So, if it wasn’t the town profiting from this fiasco, who did profit? Oh, well, maybe it’s just the typical mismanagement that is a Davidson hallmark.
