Leonard Michael Howard

CALABASH – Leonard Michael “Mickey” Howard, 68, of Calabash, died June 19, 2012, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Born March 18, 1944, in Mooresville, he was the son of the late Leonard Craven Howard and Muriel Morris Howard.

He was a mechanical engineer prior to retirement and worked at General Time in Davidson.

Survivors include his wife Olivia Mullis Howard; sons Jonathan “Curry” Howard and wife Misty, and Michael “Calli” Howard and wife Tammy of Longs, S.C.; daughter Caroline H. Roseman and husband Steve; sisters Linda Stewart and Darcy Crowson; and five grandchildren.

Services were held June 21 at Mimosa Cemetery in Davidson.

Doris Winifred Gibson Brown

HUNTERSVILLE – Doris Winifred Gibson Brown, 95, of Huntersville, died June 18, 2012, at Wilora Lake Healthcare Center in Charlotte.

Born July 6, 1916, in the Gilead Community, she was the daughter of the late Lucy Jane Beard Gibson and Albert Derr Gibson.

She was preceded in death by her husband Welbern Clegg Brown Sr.; brothers Kenneth, Louis and Mason; sisters Edna, Leona Belle, Catherine and Mildred; and grandchildren Renee Brown Johnson and George (JR) Frederickson.

Survivors include sons Welbern Clegg Brown Jr. of Mooresville and John Baxter Brown of Loris, S.C.; daughters Marlene and husband Bob Jones of Charlotte, Jeanette Anderson of Knoxville, Tenn., Carolyn and husband Mike Moore of Charlotte, Elizabeth (Betty Ann) and husband Bill Smith of Danville, Va. and Elaine and husband James Houser of Stanley; 15 grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren and three nieces.

Services were held June 21 at Gilead A.R.P. Church with Pastor Robert Hunter officiating. Interment followed at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.

Douglas G. Braun

UNION, S.C. – Douglas G. Braun, 67, of Union, S.C., died June 18, 2012, after an extended illness.

Born May 11, 1945, in Detroit, he was the son of the late George and Pat Harrington Braun.

Survivors include his wife Ginny Lawton Braun; daughters Loni B. Johnston and husband Rob of Cornelius and Wendy L. Braun of Union, S.C.; son Clinton J Braun of Arlington, Va.; brother Jeff Braun and wife Lin of Eufaula, Ala.; brother-in-law Wesley W. Lawton and wife Peggy of Greenville, S.C.; and six grandchildren.

A private family service was held.

The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home served the family.

Harriett Lemond Costner

HUNTERSVILLE – Harriett Lemond Costner, 70, of Huntersville, died June 20, 2012, at Olde Knox Commons in Huntersville.

Born Oct. 27, 1941, in Charlotte, she was the daughter of the late Woodrow Patrick Lemond and Mildred Harmon Lemond.

She retired as an administrative assistant from the insurance and building industry.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Michael Lemond.

Survivors include her husband Hiram “Archie” Costner III; brothers David Lemond and wife Jan of Monroe, George Lemond of Wilmington and Phillip Lemond of Surfside Beach, S.C.

Services were held Monday, June 25, at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte.

Marvene Shinn Whitesides

CORNELIUS – Marvene Shinn Whitesides, 63, of Cornelius, died Friday, June 22, 2012, at her home.

Born Aug. 10, 1948, in Mecklenburg County, she was a daughter to the late Clint and Margaret Shinn.

Including her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Bobby Eugene Whitesides and brother Charlie Shinn.

Survivors include her son David Whitesides of Mooresville; daughter Wanda Whitesides of Cornelius; sisters Katherine Phifer of Cornelius and Renee Henderson of Ruffin, S.C.; brothers William Shinn of Mooresville and Harry Lee Shinn of Cherryville; and  grandson Cody Briggs.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.

Services were held Monday, June 25, at the Cornelius Church of God. Burial followed at Northlake Memorial Gardens.
