Local scholars recognized as CMS valedictorians and salutatorians
CHARLOTTE – Eight area students were recognized as Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools valedictorians and salutatorians for the 2011-12 school year.
• Hopewell High School: Jeb Smith, valedictorian; and Joseph Setzer, salutatorian.
• Hough High School: Kaitlyn Taylor Crawford, valedictorian; and Ayesha Anand, salutatorian.
• North Mecklenburg High School: Christopher Jackson, valedictorian; and Sean Corcoran, Jamie Michael and Molly Sanborn, salutatorians.
Woodlawn Class of 2012 graduates
MOORESVILLE – Eleven members from Woodlawn School’s Class of 2012 graduated on the lawn of the school’s historic Stinson Hall on June 7.
Every member of the private school’s third graduating class will attend a college or university, including Princeton University, St. Olaf College, UNC- Chapel Hill and Wofford College. The 2012 graduates were offered more than $1.5 million in merit scholarships from the more than 40 colleges where they were accepted.
Select students were honored during the ceremony for their contributions to campus life through academics, service, the arts and athletics.
Cassidy Coutinho was awarded the Trailblazer Award by her fellow students for her enthusiasm and campus leadership. She recently signed a national letter of intent to play soccer for Belmont Abbey College in the fall.
Tori Rinker received the Lifelong Learning Award for her curiosity and initiative. She will attend Princeton University.
Paulina Campbell, a National Merit Scholarship winner who will attend Grinnell College in the fall, served as class speaker.
Torrence Creek Elementary media center announces summer hours
HUNTERSVILLE – The Torrence Creek Elementary School media center will open on select Tuesday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon.
Torrence Creek students may check out library books on the following dates: June 26, July 10, July 17, July 24, July 31, Aug. 7 and Aug. 14.
Vendors may sign up for home school activities fair
HUNTERSVILLE – Vendor registration is open for the fourth annual WINGS home school activities fair at the Huntersville Family Fitness and Aquatics on Aug. 3 from 2:30 to 5 p.m.
The fair is sponsored by the WINGS Home School Group to connect the home-school community in the greater Charlotte area with businesses and organizations that might have activities and other opportunities to offer home-schoolers. Businesses and organizations already planning to participate include Huntersville Parks and Recreation, The Carolina Raptor Center and Rural Hill Farm.
Past WINGS home school activities fairs have included about 50 vendors who not only showcase their goods and services, but also provide, interactive activities such as horseback riding and art demonstrations for the children who attend.

J.M. Alexander Middle registration to take place at Blythe Elementary
HUNTERSVILLE – Parents wanting to register their child at J.M. Alexander Middle School during the summer should stop by Blythe Elementary School 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday to Thursday.
Registration moved across the street due to construction throughout the summer.
Bailey Middle to hold summer registration on Tuesdays and Thursdays
CORNELIUS – Bailey Middle School will hold walk-in summer registration sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Parents who cannot attend summer registration hours due to scheduling conflicts may arrange an appointment by calling the school at 980-343-1068.
Cornelius Elementary office open Monday through Thursdays
CORNELIUS – Cornelius Elementary School will be open Monday-Thursday this summer from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
