HUNTERSVILLE – Huntersville resident Sharon Chen, a rising ninth-grader at North Mecklenburg High School, won a first-place medal with teammate Alisa Cui at the 2012 Science Olympiad National Tournament in Orlando, Fla., May 18-19.
Sharon, competing with Piedmont IB Middle School in the middle school division, took top honors in the Crime Busters event. The school also produced a first-place finisher in the food science event. The team finished 20th overall out of 60 teams from 49 states.
Sharon is a three-year veteran Piedmont IB Middle Varsity Science Olympiad team member and has been involved in many extracurricular activities, such as Mathcounts, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools middle school honors orchestra, golf, swimming and Junior Western Regional All State.
