Lake Norman Charter golf reaches regional
The Lake Norman Charter boys golf team earned its third consecutive berth in the N.C. Class 1A Western Regional tournament, which will be played at Woodbridge Golf Club in Kings Mountain. The Knights qualified with a 311 team score in the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A conference match on Monday, April 30, at Lincoln Country Club in Lincolnton. Blake Fiest (76), Jake Blum (76), Sean Murphy (77) and David Shaw (82) carded the low scores for the school.

The top three regional teams will advance to the N.C. 1A championships at Campbell University in Buies Creek on May 14-15. Last year the Knights tied for first in the regional and finished second in 2010.

Murphy, Blum and Fiest were named to the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A all-conference Team. Miller Capps, a senior from North Lincoln, was named the conference player of the year.

Davidson Day’s Anglade commits to VMI

Davidson Day all-state basketball player Phillip Anglade will play at Virginia Military Institute next season.

Anglade, a 6-foot-6 forward, averaged 13.9 points and 11.1 rebounds for the Patriots, who were 31-4 and reached the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 2A championship game. He shot 58 percent from the floor, blocked 46 shots and set Davidson Day season records for total rebounds (387) and offensive rebounds (186).

Fuller wins second straight conference title

Davidson Day golfer Kyle Fuller shot a par-72 to win the Southern Piedmont Athletic Association conference tournament Tuesday, May 1, at Catawba Country Club in Newton. Fuller was the individual medalist for the second consecutive year.

His 72 tied his career-best for an 18-hole course. Fuller edged Gaston Day’s Archer Price by one stroke. Last year, Fuller beat Price on the last hole to win the title. This season, Fuller had dropped two matches to Price during the regular season. Fuller was named the SPAA conference tournament’s most valuable player, and won a first-place medal.

Register for Spartan 5K race

The Community School of Davidson, in conjunction with the Davidson Town Day celebration, is sponsoring the Spartan 5K Road Race on Saturday, May 5, to benefit the school’s athletic boosters club.

The race will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Village Green. Register online at RacesOnline.com. Adults can register for $30 and students for $25.

Awards will be presented to the top three finishers (male and female) overall and in each age division.

Davidson Day baseball finishes strong

Will Grier blasted two home runs and had five RBIs to lead Davidson Day’s baseball team to a 14-1 victory against North Hills Christian on Monday, April 30. The Patriots, who had 12 hits and scored in every inning, also had solid hitting by Dillon Rowan (2-for-4, two RBIs), Lamar Briggs (2-for-3) and Jake Bringewatt, who was 2-for-2 with three runs  scored and two RBIs. Rowan, also the winning pitcher, improved to 8-1. Davidson improved to 18-4, and clinched the Southern Piedmont Athletic Association conference title with a 10-0 record.

Register for benefit golf tournament

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Senior Centers Golf Classic takes place June 18 at Pine Island Country Club in Charlotte. Proceeds will help CMSC continue providing programs and services to more than 4,000 older adults each year at their four locations in Mecklenburg County, including the North Mecklenburg Senior Center in Huntersville.

Registration and breakfast will begin at 8 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 9 a.m. and an awards luncheon when play is finished. Entry fee is $125 per person. The fee includes cart and greens fees, use of locker room, practice facility and range balls, breakfast and lunch, awards and prizes, a special drawing and on-course contests.  Corporate sponsorships opportunities are available.
