SouthLake’s heavy hitter headed to Queens

SouthLake Christian Academy’s Katie Schoenrock, the Lake Norman Publications 2011 Volleyball Player or the Year, signed a National Letter of Intent on April 6 to play at Queens University.
Schoenrock, a 5-foot-10 outside hitter, led SouthLake Christian to a 27-1 record and the runner-up spot in the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 3A classification.
Schoenrock had 400 kills, 89 service aces and 184 digs. She was an NCISAA all-state pick for the second consecutive year.
“I really like the new Queens coach (Lettie Wilkes),” Schoenrock said in December, when she verbally committed to Queens. “On my visit I got to hang out with the girls. They seem really close. Also, the campus is beautiful, and they have a great program for what I want to go into (communication/journalism).
Schoenrock helped SouthLake win in its first 27 matches and the Southern Piedmont Athletic Association title, then reach the 3A state final. There, the Eagles lost to Charlotte Latin, which won its eighth consecutive state championship.
She averaged 5.6 kills per game, and had more than 20 kills in six different matches. That number would have been higher had SouthLake played longer matches, but 21 of their victories were by 3-0 sweeps, meaning they didn’t extend to four or five games.
