DAVIDSON – Police have identified the body of a 50-year-old man found floating Sunday, March 18, in Lake Norman near Davidson College Lake Campus as Mitchel T. Meadows.

Meadows, of Mooresville, had spent Sunday fishing alone. He left his home dock around 6:30 a.m., according to the Iredell County office of the N.C. Wildlife Commission.

Investigators believe Meadows fell off the boat and drowned, they said. He had caught one fish, and his engine was off, leading detectives to posit he was sitting in the floating boat when he fell off.

“There was a fishing rod in the water,” Wildlife Commission Officer Ron Robertson said. “He obviously was fishing, but as far as what happened to cause him to go into the water, we don’t know.”

Kayakers found Meadows’ body later that day near a small, grassy point jutting into the water.

Meadow’s body was taken to Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem for autopsy, officials said Monday.

It is unclear when results from that autopsy will be available.
