HUNTERSVILLE – An 18-year-old man locked himself in an ex-girlfriend’s home and refused to come out last week, causing Huntersville police to call in negotiators and the SWAT team.
Police said Kendell Surles assaulted his ex March 15 and locked himself in a bedroom of the Lakehaven Drive home with a knife and refused to come out. Police called in a negotiator, extra officers, SWAT team members and EMTs, but Surles refused to leave.
After several hours of negotiating, police charged into the bedroom and arrested Surles. He was not injured, police said.
Surles was charged with two counts of assault on a female, kidnapping, communicating threats, probation violation, assault and battery, resisting arrest and assault on a government official, the jail log said.
He is being held at the Mecklenburg County Jail on a $47,500 bond, the log said.
