CONCORD – A group of Cannon School mathematicians have advanced to the state MathCounts finals after advancing at the regional competition Feb. 18 at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

The American Society of Professional Engineers sponsors MathCounts, a problem-solving competition promoting math proficiency for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders. After placing fifth, the Cannon team will go on to the state competition held March 16 in Durham.

Team members include:

• Seventh-graders Soumya Avva, Huntersville; Stanton McKay, Concord; Zack Olguin, Davidson; Brian Park, University City; and Mimi Wahid, Salisbury.

• Eighth-graders Austin Coale, Concord; Angeli Gupta, University City; Reid Herrera, Harrisburg; Davis Nelson, Salisbury; and Christiana Stylianou, Concord.

• Ninth-grader Uday Uppal of Huntersville served as the team’s assistant coach.
