Carol Harris Mayes

HUNTERSVILLE – Carol Harris Mayes, 58, died unexpectedly Feb. 12, 2012.

A native of the Ramah community of Huntersville, Ms. Mayes was a principal of Mayes Wilson & Associates, a conservation-consulting firm she founded in 2001.

A life-long land conservationist, Ms. Mayes worked for The Nature Conservancy from 1986 to 2001; she was the founding executive director of the U.S. Virgin Islands and Dominica Country program; Director of Science and Stewardship for the organization’s North Carolina Chapter; and Assistant Director of Protection Planning and Stewardship.

Ms. Mayes was a founder and board member of the Davidson Farmer’s Market; a member of the Land Trust Alliance’s consultant “faculty;” former member of Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation advisory committee; Upper Rocky River Watershed planning committee; Stoney Creek Watershed planning committee and The American Legion Auxiliary.

Ms. Mayes, a graduate of North Mecklenburg High School, earned her B.S. from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and an M.S. from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

Ms. Mayes was preceded in death by her father, G.R. Mayes, Jr. Ms. Mayes is survived by her mother, Elizabeth McCord Mayes, her brothers Glenn Mayes (Betsy), Daniel Mayes, and Thompson Mayes (Rod), nephew David Mayes (Jessica), niece Elisa Mayes and great nephew Colton, as well as many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

A funeral was held Feb. 16 at Ramah Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Kurt Johntson officiating. Internment followed at the church cemetery.

Sarah Frances Christenbury Hailey

HUNTERSVILLE – Sarah Frances Christenbury Hailey, 70, of Huntersville, died Feb.14, 2012, at the Huntersville Oaks.

She was born Aug. 29, 1941 in Mecklenburg County to the late Edward and Sarah Auten Christenbury. She, along with her husband, owned and operated Hailey’s Office Machines. Mrs. Hailey was a charter member of the North End Extension Homemakers Club.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Jack Robert Hailey of Huntersville; son, Harold Hailey and wife Janet of Troutman; daughter Ginger Everhart and husband Jeff of Lexington; grandchildren, Edward, Julie and Molly.

A funeral service was held Feb. 17 at Grace Covenant Church with Pastor Steve Kramm officiating. Internment followed at Mt. Zion Community Cemetery.

Friedrich Max Roger

HUNTERSVILLE – Friedrich Max Roger, 72 of Huntersville died Feb. 22, 2012, at Old Knox Commons.

Born Aug. 1, 1939 in Donuauworth, Germany he was the son of the late Friedrich Roger and Crezentiza Meyer Roger. He was employed with IBM as a maintenance mechanic.

He is survived by his wife Linda L. Roger; daughter, Jane Roger; son, Michael Roggenbach and numerous siblings and extended family in Germany.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Friedrich Ernest Roger in 2003.

Arrangements will be announced at a later date.

Joe ‘Red’ Jones

HUNTERSVILLE – Paul Joseph Jones, 53, of Huntersville died Feb. 18, 2012, from injuries sustained in a car wreck on Feb. 16 in Huntersville.

He was a self-employed custom cabinet maker.

He is survived by his wife, Cheryl and two beloved step-sons, Thomas and Tyler Wade; his mother, Ourren Jones Meredith; brothers, Tommy and Johnny and wife Pam; sisters, Billie Luffman and husband Johnny, Shirley Smith and husband Wayne and twin sister, Polly Whitley and husband Bill; and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves a host of very close cherished friends that he considered family.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Charlotte Torrence Jones, and father, Cecil Jones.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 3, at 4 p.m. at Hopewell Presbyterian Church, 10500 Beatties Ford Road, Huntersville. Visitation will immediately follow the service in the family life center of the church.
