Davidson Day narrowly misses title
Davidson Day’s boys basketball team advanced to the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 2A championship game, but lost 59-55 to Northside Christian on Feb. 25 in Raleigh.

Davidson Day, the top seed in the playoffs, finished 31-4. The Patriots had a five-point lead in the fourth quarter. Davidson Day won the regular-season meeting 64-59 on Jan. 14. It was the lone loss for Northside Christian (31-1) this season.

Guard Rashun Davis led Davidson Day with 19 points, and forward Dorian Albritton scored 15 points. The Patriots led 27-15 in the second quarter, and took a 29-22 lead into halftime.

Davis and forward Phillip Anglade were named to the NCISAA 2A all-state team.

Wrestlers at state championships

Seven area wrestlers competed at the N.C. High School Athletic Association state tournament Feb. 23-25 in Greensboro, but none won a championship.

Hough’s Palmer Maples, a junior, finished fourth in the 160-pound division. He went 3-2 in the tournament and finished the season 46-6.

Hough had four other wrestlers in the state tournament – Adams Nivens went 1-2 in the 126-pound division and finished with a 43-12 record. Tanner Russ (48-11) was 1-2 at 132 pounds, Jordan Thompson (32-11) was 3-2 at 152 pounds and Jacob Efird (34-12) was 1-2 at 145 pounds.

Hopewell High’s Wesley Petrick was 2-2 at 120 pounds, and finished the season with a 32-8 record. Teammate Austin Randall was 0-2 at 113 pounds and finished the season 23-12.

SouthLake Christian’s swimming champion

SouthLake Christian Academy freshman Austin Meletiou won the NCISAA 2A state championship in the 100-yard breaststroke at the state meet Feb. 21 at Greensboro Aquatic Center. His winning time was 1 minute, 3.49 seconds.

SouthLake Christian’s John Baker, a sophomore, finished second in the 100-yard butterfly and third in the 500-yard freestyle. SouthLake Christian’s boys team finished ninth among 21 teams.

Hough High girls soccer

Brandi Arey and Morgan Byrne scored two goals each as Hough High beat Independence 7-0 in the season opener on Feb. 28.

Courtney Carrol, Regan Collins and Hannah Robinson scored a goal apiece for the Huskies. Hough’s assists were by Robinson (two), Lindsay Byrne, Morgan Byrne, Brianna Cuevas, Sarah Moon and Allison Stearns.

Hough goalkeepers Marnie Merritt and Katie Easley combined for the shutout.

Cornelius PARC’s Couch to 5k running program

The Cornelius PARC Department will conduct a Couch-to-5K Running Plan  program for ages 14 and older, beginning Monday, March 5. The six-week program is Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. until April 11, held at Bailey Middle School Track, 11900 Bailey Road, Cornelius. Registration costs $40 for residents and $48 for non-residents. Participants can register in person at Cornelius Town Hall or online at www.cornelius.org/parc.

Cornelius PARC’s Boot Camp

The Cornelius PARC Department holds Boot Camp for ages 18 and up, a six-week program that will be held Saturday mornings from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., from March 3 to April 14.There will be no class April 7. All classes will be held at the Bailey Middle School Track, 11900 Bailey Road, Cornelius.

Boot Camp is an outdoor fitness program that offers fitness instruction, nutritional counseling and motivational training. Jeff Heal, owner of Fitness Together in Cornelius and Davidson, will lead the class.

Registration is $40 for residents and $48 for non-residents. Participants can register in person at Cornelius Town Hall or online through www.cornelius.org/parc.

Lake Norman Charter girls soccer

The Lake Norman Charter girls soccer team opened the season with a 7-0 rout against Lincoln Charter on Feb. 28.

Carolina Sanchez scored three goals for the Knights, and Rina Leonidas, Katie Fabian, Riley Kane and Mary Daugherty scored one goal apiece. Lake Norman Charter goalkeepers Carolyn Huddy and Rachel Quest combined for the shutout.

Register for youth volleyball

Registration is open for the Huntersville Parks and Recreation Department’s spring volleyball league, for girls ages 9-16. There will be an eight-game regular season with Saturday morning games, and an end-of-season tournament. The Davidson College women’s volleyball team will direct clinics for coaches and players at the season’s start. A “Skills Day” will be held Saturday, March 3 at Lake Norman Charter.

The coaches’ certification meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. March 7 at the park department’s third-floor office. A coach’s clinic will be at 9 a.m. March 10 at Lake Norman Charter School. The clinics with Davidson players will be during the first week of practices, beginning March 12.
