(WBTV) The man who was shot Monday, Feb. 6, in front of Dick’s Sporting Goods at Northlake Mall was released from the hospital the same day.

Police said 23-year-old Gregory Tillery was shot in the leg while getting into his car outside of the store around 4:30 p.m.

“This is the first time that I’m aware of an act like this has happened since the mall has been opened,” Lt. Brian Foley told WBTV, the Herald Weekly’s news partner.

A witness told WBTV that at least five shots were fired during the shooting.

Emergency crews say the victim was transported to Carolinas Medical Center-Main. A nurse later told WBTV that Tillery had been released from the hospital later that day.

Officers told WBTV that shots were fired at a second man, who was with the victim, and that a bullet went through his pants leg.

The second man was not injured in the shooting. A woman with the men was not injured in the shooting, either. Three cars were hit by the shots, police said.

“There were no persons in those vehicles … there were no bystanders in the area when the shooting happened,” Foley said.

The shooting took place in the parking lot near Dick’s Sporting Goods and Dillard’s.

Police say they’re working with mall security to see if the shooting was caught on tape.

They’re also interviewing the two people who were with Tillery to figure out the why in this case.

Police said the man drove away in a white Ford Excursion or Expedition with gold or tan trim around the bottom. It was last seen on Interstate-485 headed toward the Mount Holly/Steele Creek area.
