CHARLOTTE – The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Board of Education received its first report from the Privatization Advisory Committee, which recommended outsourcing some custodial functions and exploring outsourcing for some information technology services, as well as privatizing payroll, at its Feb. 14 meeting.

Created in April to review ways the district could save money, the committee recommended outsourcing custodial services to all six district administrative sites, a move that would not affect Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools employees. The district currently outsources custodial services to four of its administrative sites, a move staff members estimate saves about $110,000 per year. The committee will evaluate expanding outsourced custodial services at a pilot group of schools.

The committee also recommended that a Request for Proposal be issued for outsourcing payroll services, which would likely result in a reduction of the district’s payroll staff. An RFP would allow the district to learn the market cost of payroll services.

The committee said it does not yet have sufficient information to make a recommendation for outsourcing information technology services, but believes there are outsourcing opportunities to improve service and save money.
