CORNELIUS – Around 6 p.m. July 20, Cornelius Police Officer Matthew Sheppard responded to a cardiac arrest call on Bluff Point Road.

Upon arrival, Sheppard found Delma Smith Jr. unresponsive and not breathing, so he began to perform CPR.

Smith’s neighbor nurse Terri Vaden, saw Sheppard arrive and ran toward the house carrying a defibrillator. Vaden came in the house and asked Sheppard if he could use her help.

Sheppard and Vaden performed CPR until Mecklenburg County EMS arrived and transported him to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The Cornelius Police Department gave the Life Saving Award to Sheppard on Nov. 19 for demonstrating a high degree of professional excellence and his quick response to saving a resident.

Vaden was also awarded a Civilian Commendation for her contribution to the lifesaving efforts.

Smith has since recovered from the heart attack.
