Golf tournament to benefit youth wrestling

HUNTERSVILLE – The Titan Wrestling Academy and Husky Wrestling Club, two local youth wrestling organizations, will host a charity golf tournament Oct. 14 at Birkdale Golf Course.

A buffet lunch will be at 11:30 a.m., and the golf will begin with a 1:15 p.m. shotgun start. Captain’s choice format will be used. There are levels of sponsorship opportunities available. Proceeds will be used to maintain and grow youth wrestling programs in the Lake Norman area. Cost is $95 per golfer or $380 per foursome, which includes lunch, a golf shirt, complimentary drinks, range balls, heavy hors d’oeuvres afterward, prizes for the top teams and a silent auction.  For information, contact Gary Nivens at 704-948-026 or

Davidson College football falls to 0-4

DAVIDSON – Davidson College’s football team remained winless through four games after a 28-13 home loss to Presbyterian College on Sept. 29.

“Our plan fell into place, as we were able to shorten the first half and we were able to be within striking distance in the fourth quarter, but it just didn’t work out for us,” Davidson coach Tripp Merritt said.

Davidson’s Spencer Perry ran for a career-high 123 yards on 20 carries. Quarterback Jonathan Carkhuff went 21-for-34 for a season-high 280 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Jelani Doeman led Davidson with 10 tackles, matching his career-high, and had an interception.

Davidson will return to Pioneer League action for the remainder of the season and will host Dayton for homecoming at 1 p.m. Oct. 6.

Patriots volleyball remain perfect in conference play

DAVIDSON – Davidson Day’s volleyball team improved to 14-4 overall and 7-0 in the Southern Piedmont Athletic Association with a 26-24, 25-21, 25-23 sweep against Concord First Assembly on Oct. 1

The Patriots’ top performers were Kay Funderburk (eight kills, six digs), Kaylyn Brock (seven kills, 24 assists), Taylor Brock (12 digs, six kills) and Jeanine Grabowski (five kills).

Winning streak is five for Hough soccer

CORNELIUS – The Hough High boys soccer team maintained its lead in the I-MECK 4A conference with a 3-2 victory against Mallard Creek on Oct. 2.

The Huskies (6-5-1) improved to 5-1-1 in conference matches. They’re on a five-match winning streak. The Husky goals were by James Jackson, Kyle Williams and an own goal by Mallard Creek. Hough had assists by Blake Marin, Clay Kennedy and Justin Collins. Mallard Creek (7-6-2) slipped to 3-2-2 in conference.

College recruiters visit Davidson Day for football prospects

DAVIDSON – Football coaches from the University of Florida and University of Michigan were on the Davidson Day campus last week to talk with Patriots coach Chad Grier about junior prospects Will Grier, Jordan Brown and Mike Stevens.

Grier, a quarterback, leads North Carolina in passing yards (2,408) through six games. He has 24 touchdown passes.

Brown, a running back/defensive back, has 12 touchdowns in six games. He’s caught 24 passes for 340 yards and eight touchdowns. He rushed 23 times for 272 yards and four scores.

Stevens, a linebacker, has 27 tackles and an interception, which he returned 98 yards for a touchdown.

Woodlawn School volleyball ends Community School’s streak

DAVIDSON – The Woodlawn School volleyball team ended Community School of Davidson’s 12-match winning streak with a 19-25, 25-21, 29-27, 24-26, 15-10 victory on Sept. 28.

The victory avenged a loss earlier this season, and improved Woodlawn’s record to 11-1.

Register for kids’ Soccer Challenge

HUNTERSVILLE – Boys and girls ages 5-14 are invited to the Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge from 1-3 p.m. Oct. 13 at the St. Mark Elementary School soccer fields.

The competition will include each participant attempting penalty kicks. The soccer goal will be segmented into different scoring zones, and the child with the most points in his or her age group will move on to the next level.

All contestants will be recognized for their participation.

Register for basketball classes

HUNTERSVILLE – Holm Improvement, a Lake Norman basketball skills improvement program, and Benchwarmers Sports Complex in Mooresville are launching several eight-week basketball classes beginning Oct. 3.

The Wednesday classes include: Women’s basketball fitness class from 9:30-10:45 a.m.; lunch hoops from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.; pre-kindergarten hoops from 1:10-1:45 p.m.; and kindergarten-4th grade hoops from 2:40-3:30 p.m.
