Hough High volleyball roars into playoffs
HUNTERSVILLE – The Hough High volleyball team beat East Forsyth 25-17, 25-6, 25-12 in the first round of the N.C. 4A playoffs Oct. 20. The Huskies improved to 32-2 behind Julia Brown (14 kills), Haley Kain (nine kills), Hailey Brotze (three aces), Megan Perry (three blocks), Maddy Lippy (10 digs) and Jennifer Hart (21 assists). Hough swept Indian Trail Sun Valley 25-15, 25-11, 25-7 in the second round Oct. 23, and will host Watagua at 6 p.m. Oct. in the third round.
Hough won the I-MECK conference tournament by sweeping Lake Norman 25-17, 25-13, 25-20 in the championship match Oct. 17. Hough dominated the tournament, beating Vance 25-9, 25-8, 25-6 in the first round and Hopewell 25-9, 25-7, 25-8 in the semifinal.
Hough was 14-0 in the conference during the regular season.
LN Charter’s Archer wins regional title
BISCOE – Hannah Archer, a freshman tennis player at Lake Norman Charter, won the N.C. 1A West regional singles tennis championship Oct. 20. She qualified as a top seed for the state tournament Oct. 26 in Cary.
Archer improved to 20-0 by winning four matches at the regional tournament. She beat No. 1 seed (and defending state champion) Jordan Jackson of Mount Airy High 6-3, 6-2 in the final. In the semifinals, Archer beat Meghan Hedgepath (Gray Stone High) 6-0, 6-1.
Davidson Day nets volleyball title
DAVIDSON – Davidson Day’s volleyball team beat Hickory Christian 25-20, 25-20, 19-25, 23-25, 15-12 to win the Southern Piedmont Athletic Association championship Oct. 19.
Taylor Brock, who had 20 kills, 24 digs and four aces, was named tournament most valuable player and conference MVP. Davidson Day’s Jeanine Grabowski (10 kills and 15 digs in the final) and Kaylyn Brock (46 assists) were named to the all-conference team.
Boys’ soccer roundup
• Lake Norman Charter improved to 14-3-1 with a 2-0 victory against North Lincoln (13-6-1) Oct. 22. Evan Lucas and Zach Quest scored for the Knights, and goalkeeper Christian Hall was in net for the shutout.
• Hough High beat Lake Norman 5-4 Oct. 22 on two goals by Michael Basnett, one apiece by Clay Kennedy and Jayson Howard, and an own goal by Lake Norman. Hough (10-6-2) improved to 9-2-2 I-MECK 4A conference. Lake Norman slipped to 10-8-2, 9-3-1. q
