HUNTERSVILLE (WBTV) - Police found a loaded gun and small amount of drugs in a car after it wrecked following a short police chase in Huntersville early Thursday morning, Aug. 25.

Officials say a teacher spotted a suspicious car around 7:15 a.m. in a parking lot at North Mecklenburg High School, 11201 Old Statesville Road, shortly before the first day of school.

The teacher notified a school resource officer who approached the dark blue 1992 Chevrolet Caprice. The driver sped away from the campus with three people inside in an “erratic manner,” Huntersville police said.

Police pulled the car over, but then it sped away again and wrecked in woods near the intersection of Alexanderana and Eastfield roads.

Three of the people inside the car ran away, police said. The fourth occupant, a 15-year-old, remained with the car, and officers arrested him. Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools confirmed the teen is a student at the school.

Police found a loaded handgun and a small amount of drugs in the car.

A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department K-9 officer and dog helped search for the other three people, but police have not reported whether they found those suspects. No charges have been issued and police are still working to identify the three others in the car, Lt. Ken Richardson said Wednesday, Aug. 31.

North Mecklenburg officials locked the high school down as a matter of protocol, though police said no students were in danger.
