The NFL/Pepsi Punt, Pass and Kick competition for boys and girls ages 8 to 15 will be held Saturday, Aug. 27, at 9 a.m. at Huntersville Athletic Park, 11720 Verhoeff Dr. The event is free.
Scores will be based on distance and accuracy. The top finishers in eight age categories will advance to a sectional competition. The top five scorers from the pool of sectional champions advance to the team championship, which will be held at a Carolina Panthers home game.

SwimMAC hires three coaches
SwimMAC hired local teachers Laura Hicks, Joshua Williams and Rachel Wrede as swimming coaches primarily based in its North Region.
Hicks, who has taught five years at Barnette Elementary and Long Creek Elementary, has coached the Latta Springs/Stephens Grove Dolphins swim team since 2009. She’ll be a junior swim league coach for SwimMAC.
Williams, who has taught at Lincoln Charter School most of the past decade, will be the lead coach for SwimMAC’s Dolphin division. He has coached swimming 12 years at Cowan’s Ford Golf Club and is the boys coach at East Lincoln High. Wrede, who teaches at Mooresville High, will be a middle school TeenFit coach for SwimMAC.
College recruiters noticing Albritton
Dorian Albritton, a 6-foot-4 senior basketball guard/forward at Davidson Day, has received scholarship offers from Virginia Military Institute, New Jersey Institute of Technology, New Hampshire and Army.
His strong performance during the summer has also generated interest from Cornell, Yale, Wofford, Davidson, Boston University and Quinnipiac.
Fall sports registration under way
The Cornelius PARC Department is currently accepting registration for the following:
• flag football (players ages 4 to 14). Registration ends Aug. 28
• youth lacrosse beginner clinics (ages 5 to 17). Registration ends Sept. 8, and the clinics will be on three Sunday afternoons in September.
• Cornelius-Huntersville Youth Lacrosse League (ages 5 to 14). Registration ends Sept. 12, with intra-league play on Sunday afternoons. Previous lacrosse experience, through league play, or the beginner’s clinic, is required.
• Cornelius-Lake Norman Youth Athletic Association fall baseball (ages 5 to 16). Registration ends Aug. 27.

NFL Youth Flag Football signups
Registration for Cornelius and Huntersville’s NFL Youth Flag Football is open. The nationally affiliated program is a non-contact league for boys and girls ages 4 to 14.
Online registration is available at www.corneliuspr.org. Registration forms will be accepted at the Cornelius Town Hall or Huntersville Parks & Recreation office. Cost for residents is $35 for the 4-to-5-year-old instructional division, and $55 for other divisions, which are ages 6 to 8, 9 to 11, and 12 to14. There is an additional $10 fee for non-residents. Financial assistance for residents is available on a limited basis. Practices and games will begin in September, with practices on weeknights and games on Saturdays. All participants will receive a reversible NFL replica jersey and a trophy at the end of the season.

New adult flag football league
Registration is open for a new adult flag football league offered by the Huntersville Parks and Recreation Department. Play is open to anyone ages 18 and older, and men’s co-ed leagues are planned.
Registration closes Sept. 2, and games begin Sept. 10.
All games will be played on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon at Huntersville Athletic Park. Registration is $400 per team, and eight games are guaranteed. Register youth for cross country
Cross Country for Youth, a 10-week program for runners ages 9 to 14, is accepting registration through Sept. 12.
The Cross Country for Youth program is partnered with Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation. The objective is to introduce elementary and middle school students to cross country training.
Participants can register at www.crosscountryforyouth.org. The fee is $65 per person.
Practices will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays at Elon, Mallard Creek and Sugaw Creek recreation centers. A complete schedule of practice and competition locations will be available once registration is completed.
