Several turn out for casting call looking for extras

HUNTERSVILLE – Actors lined up at Birkdale Village this week hoping to be spotted for a role in the upcoming movie “Sleeping Around.”

The comedy will be shot in the Charlotte area, and filmmakers held a casting call Monday, July 18, looking for extras. The casting directors were recruiting people to play partiers, college students, bikini models, African kings and queens, billionaire Indians, and Saudi Arabian princes for the movie, which is set in the Hamptons, the posh and trendy New York getaway.

Alissa Meredith, the assistant for extras casting, called the characters “high end.”

Men and women, many with hair done and heels strapped, flocked to Birkdale to submit headshots and fill out applications. Several hoped to act professionally for the first time.

Keshia Johnson, one of the many who turned out for the casting, said she hopes to get involved in film but also wanted to just have some fun.

Cedrick Collins, who has been an extra in a few films, shared Johnson’s aspirations. He said he would do more in movies “if the opportunity would present itself.”

Other applicants, like Tyrena Irman and Jim Mahan, came to Birkdale for a stab at a new experience.

“It’s one of my bucket-list things I’d like to do,” Mahan said. “My son was in a movie called ‘A Federal Case.’ I’m playing catch-up with him.”

Most of the casting was done by the end of the day, Meredith said, but applicants can still submit headshots online at

While some of the filming will take place in New York, the filmakers also plan to record several scenes in Charlotte, Lake Wylie and Lake Norman in the coming months.

Leslie Greif, who has several credits to her name, including writing for Chuck Norris’ TV series “Walker, Texas Ranger” for nearly a decade, is directing the film.
