HUNTERSVILLE – Students from Hopewell High School have teamed up with representatives of the Muscular Dystrophy Association to hold the Ryan Disney Memorial Golf Tournament on Oct. 9 at the Birkdale Golf Course.

Disney, a Hopewell High student and member of the Hopewell chapter of Distributive Education Clubs of America, died due to complications from muscular dystrophy on Aug. 29, 2004. He left many friends in the Hopewell community.

Playing in the tournament costs $150 for individuals or $560 for a team of four, which includes green fees, welcome gifts, lunch, driving-range privileges and putting and chipping green practice.

Tournament registration begins at 7:30 a.m. Oct. 9, with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Organizers also will hold a post-tournament awards banquet with individual and team prizes.

People and businesses also can contribute with sponsorships and contributions go toward sending a child with muscular dystrophy to summer camp and helping fund research.

“This tournament is a great way to raise awareness about the MDA,” Erika Carroll, the tournament’s co-director, said in a news release. “We feel it is important to get more people involved with this organization, and hopefully this tournament will spread the awareness to a larger crowd. Spread the word, spread the hope.”
