Marjorie L. Stell

DAVIDSON – Marjorie Lawrence Stell, 94, died July 3, 2011, at The Pines of Davidson.

Born Oct. 11, 1916, in Mobile, Ala., Mrs. Stell was the daughter of the late Dan and Marion Gerber.

She grew up in Henderson and she attended Peace College, in Raleigh, as well as New York University and Presbyterian School of Christian Education.

She worked for the Boy Scouts of America, in New York City, before returning to Raleigh to work as director of Christian education at First Presbyterian Church.

In 1940, she married Cecil Lawrence, and in 1948, they moved to Charlotte. She worked 17 years at Covenant Presbyterian Church, as co-coordinator of Women’s Work and then parish visitor.

She was received honorary life membership of the Women’s Council of Mecklenburg Presbytery in 1966.

Her first husband, Dr. J. Cecil Lawrence; second husband, Dr. Lawrence I. Stell; whom she married in 1997; and her brother, George D. Gerber, preceded her in death.

Survivors include children Marion L. Thomas, Davidson, Patrick Lawrence and wife, JB, Concord, and Claudia Reid and husband, Lewis, Charlotte, six grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Friday July 8, at Davidson College Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Revs. Ken Craig and Bill Tiemann. Raymer-Kepner Funeral Home, Huntersville, was in charge.

Nancy C. Barkley

HUNTERSVILLE –Nancy Carolyn Barkley, 69, of Huntersville, died July 5, 2011, at Levine & Dickson Hospice House.

Born March 11, 1942, in Mecklenburg County, Miss Barkley was a daughter of the late Van Buren and Lottie Pettus Barkley.

She graduated from Kings Business College, and worked for 30 years for Southern Bell in the Yellow Pages Department. She also worked for Security Plus Insurance.

She was a member of Hopewell Presbyterian Church and enjoyed many visits from church members and others during her battle with cancer.

A memorial service was held at Friday, July 8, at Hopewell Presbyterian Church conducted by the Revs. Allan Purtill and Rev. J.E. Wayland Jr. Rayner-Kepner Funeral Home was in charge. The family will receive friends following the service.

Survivors include her sister, Peggy Washam and husband, Murvyn, of Cornelius, and brother, Van Monroe Barkley, of Charlotte.

Katie L. Dove

CORNELIUS – Katie Lee Dove, 95, of Cornelius, died July 7, 2011, at Olde Knox Commons, Huntersville.

Born June 3, 1916, in Mecklenburg County, Mrs. Dove was a daughter of the late Edward Dowd and Katie Watts Kelly.

She was married to her late husband, Charles A. Dove, for 70 years, and she played piano for her Sunday school class at Davidson United Methodist Church many years.

Survivors include her son, Larry J. Dove, and wife, Shelley, Cornelius; grandchildren Larry J. Dove II and Laura Dove Stone; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Saturday, July 9, at Davidson United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Jody Seymour, with burial at Mimosa Cemetery, Davidson. Samuel S. James, Funeral Service Licensee, Huntersville, was in charge.

James A. Frasure

HUNTERSVILLE – James Andrew Frasure, 74, of Huntersville, died July 7, 2011, at Presbyterian Hospital.

Born Jan. 23, 1937, in Mecklenburg County, Mr. Frasure was a son of the late Andrew and Thelma Greenhall Frasure.

He was a member of Friendly Baptist Church, a U.S. Army veteran, former Mason and Shriner and retired manufacturing salesman.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Ann Hasty Frasure; son, Scott R. Frasure, Huntersville; daughters Rhonda Ann Combs, Asheville, and Robin Renee Fedukovich,  Salisbury; two brothers and two sisters; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A brother preceded him in death.

A funeral service was held Saturday, July 9, at Raymer-Kepner Funeral Home.

Dianne Deane

HUNTERSVILLE – Shelia Dianne Deane, 52, of Huntersville, died July 7, 2011, at her home.

Born Sept. 28, 1958, in Union County, Mrs. Deane was a daughter of the late James Paul Jones and Mildred Pierce.

Son Michael Thomas preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, Robert “Bob” Deane; sons Robert Deane Jr. and wife, Kathy, Edgewater, Fla., David Hearst and wife, Wendy, Eden, Gregory Deane, Coco, Fla., and Travis Love, Waxhaw; brother, David Jordan; sister, Pam Stroupe; and 14 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Thursday, July 14, at 2 p.m. at Christ Community Church, conducted by the Rev. Mike Hawkins. Visitation will follow. Samuel S. James, Funeral Service Licensee, is in charge.

Frances H. McKinney

IRON STATION – Frances Horton McKinney, 70, of Iron Station, formerly of Huntersville, died Saturday, July 9, 2011, at her home.

Born Dec. 14, 1940, in Mecklenburg County, Mrs. McKinney was a daughter of the late Carl Eustace and Ella Mae Green Horton. She graduated from Christian Brothers College in Memphis, Tenn., a member of ABWA in Charlotte and retired from International Paper Co.

She was a member of Faith Baptist Church.

Survivors include sisters Mae Clemmer and husband, David, Charlotte, Shirley Smith and husband, Clyde, Fort Mill, S.C., and Carolyn Phillips and husband, Dan, Roan Mountain, Tenn.; and brothers Larry Horton and wife, Jan, Cornelius, and Jack Horton and wife, Lydia, Franklin.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, July 12, at Faith Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Mike Scott, with burial at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Cornelius. Raymer-Kepner Funeral Home, Huntersville, was in charge.
